Applying for a .com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .asn.au, or id.au domain name is done through an Australia registration company. Before you register your domain name, a thorough search of all similar domain names must be done. It is a good idea to consult an intellectual property lawyer to help you with registering your domain name.
To be eligible to register a .com.au domain name you must be:
- Trading under a registered business name
- An Australian partnership
- The owner of an Australian Registered Trade Mark or
- A foreign company licensed to trade in Australia

- Closely and substantially connected with you
New Generic Top Level Domain (gTLD)
Domain names that end with .com or .net are known as top-level domain names (gTLD). These can only be registered with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
